Pompey's Bridge

Pompey's Bridge (Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) also known as the Magi Bridge, is an ancient Roman bridge located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. It was built around 65 BC during the campaign of the Roman General Pompey the Great in Iberia and Colchis. The bridge played a crucial role in trade and connectivity in the region.

Here are some key points about Pompey's Bridge:

•    Historical Significance: The bridge was part of the Georgian military road and was used throughout antiquity, the Middle Ages, and even into the 19th century. It connected the left bank of the Kura River with an island, and from there, another fragment led to the right bank2.
•    Literary Mention: The bridge was mentioned by famous writers such as Pushkin and Tolstoy in their travel notes.
•    Modern Times: The original bridge is still visible from the road to Mtskheta city. The bridge occasionally is exposed when the water level of the Kura (Mtkvari) River is lowered.
•    UNESCO World Heritage Site: The bridge is part of the historical monuments of Mtskheta, which were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
